Voluntary Simplicity In Our Troubled Times: A Movement Renewed

Finding happiness in living more simply

The voluntary simplicity movement is heating back up! A May 17th article in The New York Times put it well: "Though it may not be the stuff of the typical American dream, the voluntary simplicity movement, which traces its inception to 1980s Seattle, is drawing a great deal of renewed interest."

It's hard to believe this much time has passed, but nearly two decades ago the modern Voluntary Simplicity movement was born in north Seattle. As Phinney Ecovillage founder Cecile Andrews noted in her book, The Circle of Simplicity, in 1989 she offered a workshop at North Seattle Community College on voluntary simplicity. Four people registered. Three years later she offered it again. This time, 175 people showed up. Today scores of articles, TV shows, books attest to the movement's enduring appeal, and simplicity circles can be found throughout the globe.

Signs abound that in our era of skyrocketing prices, plummeting wages and falling dollars, as well as mounting concerns over global climate disruption and trashing the planet, living simply holds the answer to many of our ills. Come find out how the message and strategy of voluntary simplicity can help us find our way in troubled times. As always with an Ecovillage getogether, a lot of sharing and fun will accompany presentations by some of the movement's leading voices.

Besides Cecile, on hand will be John de Graaf, film producer and author of Affluenza as well as founder of the Take Back Your Time movement; Wanda Urbanska of Simple Living TV, Pastor Carol jensen and the Rev. Rich Lang.

We'll all explore what Voluntary Simplicity means for family, finances, energy, food, ecology, community-building and social justice. It should be a wonderful time!

The program is free and will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, in St. John United Lutheran Church, 5515 Phinney Ave N across from the zoo.
